The Brittany office for waterway manufactures or refurbishes in its workshop located at Saint-Germain sur Ille, in the dpt of Ille & Vilaine (35), all the timber constructions that fit the waterways of the area of Rennes.
In addition to the construction and installation of pontoon, gangways, guardrails in Oak, Chestnut or Robinia, the workshop in in charge of the maintenance of the 96 lock-gates which are installed on the Ille & Rance Canal, between Rennes (35) and Dinan (22).
As a rate of 3 to 5 gates a year, they are replaced every 30 years. The shaping and the assembling of the gates are done on a traditional way by a team of 3 specialists.
The lifetime of those gates is related of course to the grade of the oak which is used.
The sawmill Grouazel is proud to to supply regularly the workshop of Saint-Germain sur Ille with timber pieces which have been carefully selected for this purpose.
After being assembled and painted, those gates with have a weight of several tons each, are installed to control the flow of the river on the many locks along the way.
